Prof. Ilham Akhundov

Ilham Akhundov began his appointment as the Director of Mathematics, Business and Accounting Programs in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo in July 2013. Previously he was a faculty member at Statistics and Actuarial Science Department, University of Waterloo. He was Deputy Director of University of Waterloo UAE Campus (2008-2012) working diligently building an admirable profile for the University of Waterloo in the region. Prior to this position Dr. Akhundov was a faculty member in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at McMaster University for 8 years, (2000-2008). In 1999-2000, Akhundov was Fulbright scholar in the Mathematics Department at Texas A&M University, USA. Professor Akhundov is an internationally published researcher focusing on asymptomatic methods in probability theory a nd mathematical statistics, with applications in extreme value theory and queueing theory. He has published over thirty journal articles in the areas of order statistics, records, and distribution theory. Akhundov has wide experience with Canadian government research laboratories doing fundamental statistics research and he has been a research consultant for a number of finance-related and technology companies. He founded and directed the Canadian Institute of Azerbaijani studies, a community based non-for profit venture located in Toronto. Professor Akhundov received his PhD in mathematics with specialization in probability theory and mathematical statistics from St. Petersburg University (1988) and his MSc in Mathematics, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University (1981).
